In cases of azoospermia (0 sperm count) or severe oligospermia (sperm count less than 5 million / ml) a donor sperm, IUI can be done.
In this process, a donor semen sample is procured from a licensed semen bank. The donor has been previously screened for all infectious diseases such as HIV, HBsAg, HCV, VDRL as well as genetic diseases such as Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia. The donor semen sample usually has a good sperm count and motility.
Once the follicle ruptures post ovulation induction, this donor semen sample is subjected to sperm washing as in IUI above, and the washed semen sample is then introduced with an IUI cannula into the uterus. The rest of the procedure is similar to an IUI.
